Tuesday Club - “Himalayas"
The evening featured a talk on “Himalayas" and a member of Lodge's mission to reach Base Camp. This was a fascinating anecdotal talk on a personal journey through the Himalayas with pictures.
Trek to the Top of the World
The intrepid team of seven completed the trek from Lukla (2,850 metres above sea level) to Everest Base camp and back again in just 16 days! The team set off from Kathmandu on Saturday, 3rd November, arriving at Lukla, the most dangerous airstrip in the world to land at! Rather than take the direct route, the team headed north, up the Gokyo valley, getting into it via the Mong pass (4,000 metres). Having reached the Gokyo lakes, the team climbed Gokyo Ri (5,360 metres) to get outstanding views of Everest. The following day they left the Gokyo valley by climbing over the Cho La pass (5,400 metres) which involved an 800 metre almost vertical climb up a scree path, followed by a long descent over sheer rock onto a glacier and ice field. The whole day took 9½ hours and was the most physically demanding of the whole trip. On Wednesday, 14th November the team reached Base Camp and the following day climbed Kala Pattar (5,500 metres) with brilliant views of Everest. Temperatures on the trek fell to -12°c in the bedrooms at night (even colder in the toilets!) The trek was completed on the evening of Sunday 18th November and the team then spent a couple of days in Kathmandu before flying out on Wednesday, 21st November. Money was raised for Prostate Cancer UK (total currently stands at £38,500). Others raised money for various charities including Multiple Sclerosis and a South African charity supporting education for children in townships. |
